Who this calculator is for

Use the interactive Demerit Points Calculator when you know (or suspect) which specific offence is on your ticket and want to see its point value without scrolling through a full chart. It's built as a quick lookup, not a full explanation of how Ontario's demerit-point system works as a whole — for that, see our Demerit Points guide.

How it works

The calculator matches the offence you select against Ontario's demerit-point schedule — the same data published in full, with sources, on our Ontario Demerit-Point Chart. It returns the standard point value associated with that offence category. It doesn't calculate anything unique to your circumstances; it's a lookup against a fixed schedule, which is why the result matches the chart exactly for the same offence.

What it can't tell you

It can't tell you the fine amount for your ticket, whether the offence might be reduced through a plea discussion, or your current running point total. It also can't distinguish between an officer-issued and a camera-issued version of an offence where that distinction changes the point value (red-light tickets are the clearest example — see Red-Light Offences). If your situation involves one of those nuances, the full chart's notes will generally cover it in more detail than the calculator's single selected value.

Manual reference table

If you just need a quick point value without opening the interactive tool, here's the same data in a compact table. See the full Ontario Demerit-Point Chart for the complete list, sources, and notes on exceptions like camera-issued tickets.

Points Example offence
7Failing to remain at the scene of a collision, or failing to stop for police
6Careless driving, racing, stunt driving, speeding 50+ km/h over the limit, failing to stop for a school bus, second distracted-driving conviction
4Speeding 30–49 km/h over the limit, following too closely
3Speeding 16–29 km/h over the limit, failing to yield, officer-issued red light, first distracted-driving conviction
2–3Improper turn
2Failing to wear a seatbelt, failing to signal
0Speeding 1–15 km/h over the limit (fine only, no points)

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this different from the Ontario Demerit-Point Chart?

This page explains the calculator's methodology and gives a compact manual lookup. The full chart is the complete, sourced reference with every offence and notes on exceptions.

Why does the calculator show the same number as the chart?

Because both draw from the same underlying demerit-point schedule. The calculator is a faster lookup interface; the chart is the complete reference with sources.
