Photo Radar Fine Calculator
Photo radar — automated speed enforcement — worked differently from an officer-issued ticket. Ontario repealed the program province-wide in November 2025; this tool remains useful for an existing ticket issued before the cutoff.
Program repealed as of November 14, 2025: Ontario removed municipalities’ authority to operate photo radar cameras under Bill 56. This calculator remains useful if you received a ticket for a speed recorded before that date. See our photo radar repeal explainer for what changed and why a ticket can still arrive by mail after the cutoff.
Photo radar, formally automated speed enforcement, was generally limited to community safety zones and school zones, and was addressed to the vehicle’s registered owner rather than a specific driver. For the full background on how it worked and how it differed from a red-light camera or an officer-issued ticket, see our automated enforcement explainer.

How the estimate works
The calculator maps a recorded speed to the same general fine bands described in our speeding offence guide, with one key difference from an officer-issued ticket: a photo radar ticket is generally fine-only, carrying no demerit points, since it’s addressed to the registered owner rather than a confirmed driver. If the location was also a designated community safety zone, the fine is commonly doubled for the same recorded speed — see our community safety zones explainer for how that designation works.
What this tool can't tell you
It can’t confirm whether a specific location is currently a designated community safety zone or school zone, or the exact current fine schedule if it has recently changed. The amount printed on the notice you received by mail is the reliable figure for your specific ticket.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a photo radar ticket add demerit points?
No. Because it's addressed to the registered vehicle owner rather than a confirmed driver, a photo radar ticket is generally fine-only, with no demerit points.
Is photo radar the same as a red-light camera?
No. A red-light camera is tied to a specific intersection's signal, while photo radar measures speed and is generally limited to community safety zones and school zones. See our red-light camera calculator for that offence specifically.
Why would the fine be higher than a regular speeding ticket at the same speed?
If the location is a designated community safety zone, the fine for the same recorded speed is commonly doubled, though the demerit-point value (if any applied) doesn't change because of the zone.
